Ada was first established in 1821 as a fur trading post and was the first official settlement in Kent County.  Today, Ada Township includes 37 square miles and has a population of about 13,000. The varied neighborhoods, as well as rural residential areas, supply many types of lifestyle options for people looking for everything from a brand new custom home in the heart of town to a lovely country cottage surrounded by nature.  The family-friendly township is just a nice place to call home, and to raise a family.  The seasonal weather means residents enjoy warm and sunny springs and summers and cool or cold autumns and winters. This type of weather is very attractive to many people looking for a place to settle down long-term.

Ada Township maintains over 1,000 acres of public land.  The warmer months in the township are all about nature and being out near the river, at the parks or enjoying fellowship with friends. These lands include community parks a system of trails. There is much to see and do but a particularly fun family activity on a pretty day is to head out to the Grand River Nature Area. The area has many paved trails and walkways for those who wish to exercise, take a stroll or just relax amongst the trees.  Habitats, cultural history as well as the wildlife within the preserve are explained and discussed on signs posted along the trails.  There are also Leonard Park, Roselle Park and Ada Township Park.

At the parks, the city runs a wide variety of community programs for both children and adults.  Ada Village Kids' Garden is a program where kids can learn about gardening, stewardship of the land and healthy diet.  There are also summer half-day programs as well as multi-day summer camp adventures. As for the family, there are so many events and activities to get involved in that you won’t know where to start. July 4th Fireworks, River Clean Up Days, the Roselle Park River Festival and much more. There is ice skating and snowshoeing in the winter and plenty of races, games and outdoor festivities during the warmer months.
